Collandra North wins prestigious Hay Merino champion

Tumby Bay’s Collandra North Poll Merino Stud claimed the prestigious Elders Champion March shorn ram at the Hay Merino Sheep Show on Saturday, June 14.

Stud principal Sydney Lawrie said Collandra North had won either the medium or the strong March shorn ram on several occasions, and both the medium and strong champion one year.

However, this was the first time the stud had gone one better – to win the overall March shorn champion ram in the past decade or so of entering.

Along the way, Collandra North’s winner this year was also judged the best hogget ram from South Australia in the show.

Sydney said the winning ram was a month or two younger than most of the other entries.

“He is actually only an August drop – he is only actually 10-months-old,” he said.

The ram goes back to the Collinsville Imperial 521 line, whose progeny Collandra North bought three years ago, as part of continued improvement of their stud.

“We have got quite a few half brothers to him in our ram sale,” Sydney said.
