Celebrating 110 years of research and innovation

Minnipa Agricultural Centre (MAC) marks a significant milestone this year celebrating 110 years of agricultural research to support Eyre Peninsula growers.

Proudly operated by the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI), MAC will celebrate this milestone at its annual Field Day, on Wednesday, September 10.

SARDI research scientist Amanda Cook says that in recognition of the 110th anniversary, this year’s SARDI MAC Field Day would not only feature the research updates but also reflect on more than a century of innovation and breeding that has shaped grain production on Eyre Peninsula.

“MAC researchers have planted a commemorative wheat trial featuring historic and modern varieties, including varieties such as Halberd, Condor, Frame and Yitpi, plus more modern cultivars like Calibre, CL Tomahawk and Shotgun,” she said.

“This trial will provide a unique opportunity to reflect on breeding advancements and their impact on farming systems tailored to the Upper Eyre Peninsula’s low rainfall conditions.”

Other highlights of the MAC Field Day program include a feature on the agronomic management of lentils in the low rainfall zone, including a dedicated panel session on breeding updates and practical agronomy.

“We know that lentil agronomy is a priority for many who are wanting to integrate lentils into their system,” Amdanda said.

Nearly 150 growers and industry representatives attended the MAC Field Day last year to learn about the latest research in low rainfall farming systems, and it is hoped numbers will be the same this year.

The program includes topics interest such as:

– Managing herbicide residues

– Updates from the GRDC National Variety Trials (NVT)

– Nitrogen cycling in low rainfall farming systems

– Barley biomass optimisation

– Insights into strip and disc seeding systems and their application in the region

– Barley grass weed management

– Carbon farming considering rotations, emissions intensity and accounting

– Water budgeting, quality, and system sustainability

– Managing Etiella Moth in lentils and unpredictable pests in a variable climate

Morning tea and lunch will be provided free of charge thanks to morning tea sponsor Rabobank and lunch thanks to gold sponsor AGT.
