Harvest begins with Thevenard delivery

A Far West farmer has made the first delivery at a Viterra site for the 2024-25 harvest.

Penong grower Bronte Warmington made the delivery of barley at the Thevenard site on Thursday, October 10.

Viterra’s general manager of operations Gavin Cavanagh said it was always good to kick off the first delivery.

“In a season like this where growers are looking at below average production, a flexible and efficient network is incredibly important,” he said.

“We’re in constant contact with our grower customers to understand when they will be ready to deliver and will work our operations around their requirements.

“We know that when the crops are ready and the weather is suitable, growers will want to harvest and deliver as quickly as possible, and our team and sites are fully prepared to safely assist our customers through this.”

Viterra has been working with growers in the lead up to the harvest, including planning what segregations it provided across its sites.

“We have focused on understanding what growers have planted and matching our segregations to their needs,” Mr Cavanagh said.

“This included introducing new lentil segregations, including at our Thevenard site, following feedback from growers that they were increasing lentils plantings across the state. We also increased Commodus barley and GM canola segregations.

“As harvest starts, we will continue to work with growers and introduce new segregations based on what grades they are seeing in different areas, which is made possible due to the size and flexibility of our network.”
