SALT Festival set to shine

The 2024 SALT Festival is set to provide plenty of fun times and sensational memories, with an abundance of acts and activities to enjoy across the event from April 19 to 28.

SALT Festival coordinator Nic Conway said there would be 35 different events and more than 100 different show sessions at this year’s festival.

“There will be local and visiting creators showcasing some incredible acts, with everything from music, workshops, interactive arts and films,” he said.

“There’s things for adults and kids, [and] we have a world premiere coming to the SALT Festival.

“Last year we had Sea of Light come to Cummins and it was a smash hit and the same group that did that show are bringing the world premiere of Light Beats, which is another free interactive show for kids.”

Mr Conway said the Port Lincoln foreshore would also be brightened in this year’s festival.

“Through the Australian Government’s Festival of Australia program we’re having a large scale fire, light and lantern show on the foreshore of Port Lincoln,” he said.

“It’s for one night only during the SALT Festival and it’s called SALT on the Water – Night of the Nudibranch.

“It’s a new event and will allow audiences to bask in vibrant lanterns, lights and fire murals and the ocean will be the perfect backdrop and will be held on April 21, between the Port Lincoln jetty and silos.”

He encouraged everyone to look for both free and paid events so numbers could be managed.

Since the SALT Festival started it has gone from strength to strength, Mr Conway said.

“It’s been a launch pad for local artists and visiting artists to enjoy the EP and provide them with a platform where they can present their ideas,” he said.

“It’s obviously grown immensely and we just have so many shows and have had so many amazing acts come through, from the symphony orchestra to Josh Pyke and this year we have Nic Cunningham coming back.

“I think with the exception of Covid, we’ve been growing and growing and now we’re back to full force and we’re focussing on local and SA acts in the program this year.”

For those who enjoy gardening the festival will also welcome Sophie Thomson from Gardening Australia for a demonstration on community gardens.

“It’s going to be really exciting, in addition to Gardening Australia, she contributes to the Sunday Mail and she has a regular spot on ABC radio,” Mr Conway said.

The big part of the success of SALT has been the way it has been embraced.

“It’s been embraced by the EP and the artists in the area make up 80 per cent of the program, with visitors travelling from all over Australia and even the world to be part of SALT, ” Mr Conway said.

“All the volunteers that jump on board are critical to the success and it’s what dreams are made of.

“People can register to volunteer on the website and we are really grateful for the sponsorship support of local businesses too.”
