Managing costs important for EP farmers

For broadacre growers across Eyre Peninsula, the margin for error in 2026 continues to tighten.

With input costs for urea, lime and gypsum placing sustained pressure on budgets, the focus has shifted to de-risking every decision.

“EP growers are dealing with some of the most variable soil profiles in South Australia,” Jeremy Wagner of WSB Cummins sales said.

“Applying product at a precise rate isn’t just about accuracy anymore; it’s about managing costs.”

As the exclusive dealer for Marshall Multispread on Eyre Peninsula, WSB Distributors provides growers with tools like the I4M V3 control system to move away from blanket applications.

“Inputs can be targeted to areas where they’ll deliver a yield response, while reducing spend on non-responsive ground,” Wagner explained.

“In a tight season, that accuracy flows straight to the bottom line.”

Efficiency extends to the tractor fleet, where managing diesel use remains a critical lever for cost control.

Wagner noted that growers were turning to Fendt and Massey Ferguson as the most fuel-efficient options available.

These machines utilise low engine speed concepts to deliver maximum torque at lower RPM, significantly lowering fuel burn during intensive seeding and spreading periods.

Precision spraying further protects margins.

The Fendt Rogator with Weed-It technology, combined single nozzle section control, allows for targeted weed management rather than wasteful blanket spraying.

“Working capital is stretched, so every litre of fuel and every kilogram of fertiliser has to earn its place,” Wagner said.

With the season underway, the WSB Cummins team is on the ground with experienced technicians and strong parts availability.

Their goal is to help farmers manage complexity and improve results by applying local knowledge with greater precision.
