Drought-hit farmers get project boost

Livestock producers can continue to benefit from practical, grassroots drought support, with the state government confirming ongoing funding for the Red Meat Challenges (RMC) Project.

The initiative, backed by $50,000 through the government’s $73 million Drought Support Package, will deliver technical workshops and community events designed to strengthen resilience and recovery during prolonged dry conditions.

Livestock SA chairperson Gillian Fennell said the project’s continuation reflected the importance of targeted, hands-on support.

“South Australian producers continue to face extremely challenging dry conditions, and with no clear seasonal break, initiatives like the Red Meat Challenges Project provide much-needed technical guidance as well as opportunities for communities to connect,” she said.

Ms Fennell said the program has already had a significant reach across the state.

“The RMC Project has already reached more than 5000 producers through technical workshops and barbecues, and this next phase will ensure that support continues where it is needed most,” she said.

Events will be delivered in two tiers – larger workshops and webinars will focus on technical advice and shared learning, while smaller community-led sessions will address regionally specific challenges such as feed budgeting, pasture recovery and animal health.

Each event will include a social element to encourage peer support and connection.

Ms Fennell said the program recognised that resilience was both practical and social.

“This project recognises that resilience is not just about technical knowledge,” she said.

“It is also about maintaining strong, connected communities.”

She said the partnership with government and industry would continue to be vital.

“Livestock SA looks forward to working with producers, consultants, and regional partners to deliver events that make a tangible difference for our members and their communities,” Ms Fennell said.
